Negative Practices on Halloween:

Despite being a playful and joyful holiday for many people, Halloween has also been associated with some negative practices over the years. It's important to note that not all Halloween celebrations involve these negative behaviors, but it's crucial to raise awareness about them.

Vandalism: In some areas, Halloween has historically been an excuse for vandalism, such as damaging properties, destroying decorations, or vandalizing gardens. This can result in property damage and create an atmosphere of insecurity.

Pranks gone too far: Occasionally, Halloween pranks can cross the line and become cruel or dangerous. These pranks may include excessively scaring people or endangering others with hazardous objects.

Excessive alcohol consumption: For some, Halloween is an opportunity for excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to irresponsible behaviors and, in extreme cases, traffic accidents or injuries.

Cultural appropriation: When choosing costumes, people may sometimes engage in cultural appropriation by dressing in a way that ridicules or disrespects a specific culture. This is insensitive and offensive.

Tampered treats: Although cases are rare, there is always concern that tampered or dangerous treats may be found during candy collection. For this reason, parents are encouraged to carefully inspect their children's candy.

It's important to remember that Halloween can be a fun and safe holiday when celebrated responsibly and with respect for others. Promoting safety, cultural awareness, and respect for others is essential for enjoying Halloween appropriately.

The Power of Pets

Nothing compares to the joy of coming home to a loyal companion. The unconditional love of a pet can do more than keep you company. Pets may also decrease stress, improve heart health, and even help children with their emotional and social skills. An estimated 68% of U.S. households have a pet. But who benefits from an animal? And which type of pet brings health benefits? Over the past 10 years, NIH has partnered with the Mars Corporation’s WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition to answer questions like these by funding research studies. Scientists are looking at what the potential physical and mental health benefits are for different animals—from fish to guinea pigs to dogs and cats. Research on human-animal interactions is still relatively new. Some studies have shown positive health effects, but the results have been mixed. Interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals...
