Northumbria Police: Drones ready to 'catch criminals and improve safety'

Northumbria Police is about to start using eight drones as "eyes in the sky" to tackle crime. The force's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Kim McGuinness said the devices would be available at all times, with two of the drones able to fly in challenging weather conditions. Initially three officers have had pilot training, with a further 16 expected to be ready by the end of November. Ms McGuinness said it was "important" to find new ways "to fight crime". "This is just a small start, but it means we will have the ability to use technology to support officers and take on criminals," said Ms McGuinness.  "These eyes in the sky will make a real difference in everything from catching criminals to improving safety at events, with intelligence-led policing at its heart. "We've seen in other forces their use grow and I think that will become a feature of policing here as well."

Or maybe you want to upgrade to one of the best curved gaming monitors, which can make a noticeable difference in the way you work and play. Is it possible to regulate artificial intelligence?

Can artificial intelligence be kept under control? Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, says that believing it can be is akin to "magical thinking". "In many cases politicians and their aides have a weak understanding of how the internet works, and what it is possible to achieve," says Mr Wales, who has spent many hours explaining both technology and its role in free speech to politicians around the globe. "The question of a body like the United Nations regulating AI is like suggesting the UN regulate [image editing app] Photoshop." His point is that he thinks it would be pointless. The issue of whether AI should be regulated, and to what extent, heated up this summer when UN Secretary General António Guterres convened the first ever UN Security Council meeting  to specifically discuss  its potential dangers. Speaking in regard to everything from AI-powered cyber attacks, to the risk of malfunctioning AI, how AI can spread misinformation, and even the ...

How artificial intelligence is matching drugs to patients

Dr Talia Cohen Solal sits down at a microscope to look closely at human brain cells grown in a petri dish. "The brain is very subtle, complex and beautiful," she says. A neuroscientist, Dr Cohen Solal is the co-founder and chief executive of Israeli health-tech firm Genetika+. Established in 2018, the company says its technology can best match antidepressants to patients, to avoid unwanted side effects, and make sure that the prescribed drug works as well as possible. "We can characterise the right medication for each patient the first time," adds Dr Cohen Solal. Genetika+ does this by combining the latest in stem cell technology - the growing of specific human cells - with artificial intelligence (AI) software. From a patient's blood sample its technicians can generate brain cells. These are then exposed to several antidepressants, and recorded for cellular changes called "biomarkers". This information, taken with a patient's medical history and...
